A bank or a bureau will quote two other rates. It buys below this figure and sells above it; the gap is its margin, and a fee may come on top.

At the CBN official rate, . How the rate is set

At a bank or a bureau you will get a different amount: it changes at its own buying and selling rates, not at this one, and may charge a fee.

Before you change money

Ask for the rate and the fee in writing and compare what you would get with this answer. The difference is what the exchange costs you.

The parallel market rate

Beside the official rate there is a street, or parallel, market where dollars change hands between individuals and unlicensed dealers. Its rate is usually weaker for the naira, and it is what most people mean by the “black market rate”.

What this site prints
The official rate of the Central Bank of Nigeria, with the date it applies to and a link to where it was published. Every figure here comes from a source you can open.
What this site does not print
A parallel-market rate. Nobody records the trades on that market, so there is no source to cite: the figures that circulate are asking prices from single dealers and posts.
  1. Why are there two rates?

When banks cannot supply all the dollars people want at the official rate, demand moves to a market outside them, where the price is whatever buyer and seller agree. The wider the shortage, the wider the gap between the two.

  2. Why do the figures online differ?

Each is one dealer’s quote, in one city, at one hour, often for one size of note. Some are posted to move the market. None is a record of a completed trade.

  3. What is the risk on the street?

Counterfeit notes, short counts, robbery after the exchange, and no receipt to complain with. A transfer to a stranger can simply never arrive.

  4. What does the law say?

Buying and selling foreign currency is a licensed activity. Dealing with an unlicensed changer can break the exchange rules, and money lost that way cannot be claimed back through a bank or a regulator.

See the official rateGuide: the official and the parallel market

This page shows the official exchange rate of the US dollar in Nigerian naira for the most recent working day, as published by the Central Bank of Nigeria. The rate is the central bank's official figure of the day, published once on working days. It is not a live quote and it does not move while you read.

Reading the band at the top

The band at the top carries the essentials. The rate is the official dollar-to-naira figure for the day, [[AMT]]. The change shows how far it has moved since the previous rate, so you can see the direction and size of the shift at a glance. The time stamp tells you when the page was last updated with the published rate, dated .

What the converter and the table do

The converter turns any amount you enter into the other currency at the official rate, so you can check what a sum in dollars comes to in naira, or the reverse. The table of round amounts saves you the typing: it lists common figures in dollars with their naira equivalents at the same rate.

Why a bank or bureau gives a different amount

A bank or a bureau de change sets its own buying and selling rates and adds fees. The gap between those rates and the official figure is how they cover costs and margin, so the cash you receive will rarely match the official rate exactly.

Other sections

The rest of the page holds the list of other currencies, the history of past official rates, and the sources behind the figures. This is an automated converter: it publishes official rates and nothing more.
